Ranch Manager (ID: 5541)

THE ROLE:

Location: Ranch 20 minutes from the outskirts of Calgary

Hours: Full-Time, Permanent

Reporting to: President

On behalf of a client, we are seeking a skilled and experienced Ranch Manager to oversee the operations and day-to-day maintenance of a privately owned ranch, that includes both cattle and equestrian facilities. This facility is a commercial cow/calf operation of 350 head. While oversight will be on the overall property, attention will be focused mainly on the cattle operation.

This role is responsible for the day-to-day management of livestock, maintenance of the ranch’s infrastructure, the maintenance of surrounding properties, and the upkeep of farming equipment and machinery. The successful candidate for this role will be well versed in cattle management, farming, and operations management. This role requires excellent communication skills, and a deep understanding and passion for the ranching and cattle lifestyle. The successful candidate will also demonstrate a high level of teamwork, initiative, flexibility, and reliability, and have a superb attention to detail and be always highly professional.

Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

• Oversee the health, breeding, and care of cattle and horses, ensuring that livestock productivity is maximized through effective herd health protocols and proper nutrition.
• Manage and maintain ranch properties, including pastures, barns, fences, and other infrastructure, ensuring all are kept in optimal condition. This includes maintaining the properties used for the AirBnB business.
• Lead farming activities, such as pasture rotation, crop management, and feed production. Ensure optimal land use and coordinate the cultivation and harvesting of hay.
• Manage cattle movement and treatment while on horseback.
• Oversee the use and maintenance of all farm and ranch equipment, including but not limited to tractors, balers, irrigation systems, etc. Ensure timely repairs and maintenance of tools and facilities.
• Ensure adherence to and compliance with local, provincial, and federal regulations regarding animal welfare, environmental practices, and ranch operations.
• Address any concerns, questions, or requests in a timely manner.
• Hire, supervise, and train ranch staff members in proper cattle care techniques and procedures, and providing feedback, as needed.
• Maintain detailed records on livestock health, breeding programs, and land management activities.
• Ad hoc projects and other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

In addition to the above details, other qualifications include:

• Experience operating and maintaining farm equipment such as tractors, harvesters, and other machinery.
• Must be comfortable around horses and be able to perform some tasks while on horseback.
• Have a minimum of 10-15 years of experience in farming and cattle.
• A detailed understanding of the care and attention needed while caring for animals.
• Must have high attention to detail and be able to problem solve effectively.
• Ability to lift 60+ pounds and perform physically repetitive tasks.
• Must be able to take initiative.
• Must possess the ability to delegate tasks, as needed, and work collaboratively within a cohesive team.
• Follow instructions precisely and adhere to established routines, processes, and procedures.
• Possess excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Ability to work long hours and some overtime, and be on-call as necessary, especially during peak seasons (calving, haying, etc.)
• Own reliable transportation and hold a valid driver’s license with a clean driving history.
• Be courteous, discreet, honest, reliable, and responsible.
• Must be adaptable, flexible, and possess a positive attitude.
• Must be legally able to work in Canada.
• Successfully complete a criminal and credit back check process.
