Hill Top Sires is a swine unit, located near Gorrie, producing boar semen for sale within Ontario. The barn lead is responsible for the boar care, semen collection, in barn supervision of staff and care of facilities. The successful candidate can positively impact sow fertility in client's barns as well as creating a positive work environment for boars and staff.
Duties would include:
Animal Care:
Feeding and other care of the boars,
Semen collection, including organization of staff and daily work within the barn,
Boar training.
Receiving, prep to ship and shipping boars
Order feed and other boar supplies
Maintain records
Collect samples (blood or other) if required.
Ensure that boars are treated humanely.
Care of Facilities
Ensure facilities are clean, well maintained and functioning.
Communicate to the supervisors any repairs required. Manage this proactively to minimize the need for emergency repairs.
Understand and be able to operate the ventilation, feed, water and pressure washer systems.
People
The barn lead needs to organize daily in barn work to care for the boars and get semen collection and other barn tasks done efficiently.
Understand and enforce biosecurity protocols.
Train and supervise the people working in the barn.
This is a permanent position of 25 – 30 hours per week, early mornings, weekdays. Previous livestock experience is important with swine experienced preferred. Training in semen production will be provided.
This would be a good position for someone who enjoys working with animals and leading a small team and takes pride in delivering a quality product. A positive attitude and willingness to learn are essential.
