Job Description

Duties:

Supervision: Supervises daily activities of farm workers in the breeding and production programs; oversees the breeding program and ensures that duties defined by the Head of Broodstock Development are completed; oversees collection of routine production records including feed, mortality, animal movements, and processing; assists the Operations Manager and Head of Operations in developing daily work schedules; ensures that biosecurity practices are being maintained; ensures that staff are adhering to Standard Operation Protocols outlined in the Miracle Springs Inc. Biosecurity Manual.

Animal Husbandry: Feeds and calculates daily rations, monitors stock behavior and conducts routine health diagnostics, conducts routine egg and stock production, cleans raceways, tanks, troughs and incubator systems, performs fish inventories, grades fish, monitors growth and prepares growth curves, marks fish as required for research projects; assists in determining and refining best husbandry practices for Rainbow trout, Arctic char and other species as required.

Operation and Maintenance of Facility: Monitors water flow and quality parameters using hand-held probes and biochemical tests; maintains proper water flow and rearing environments; responds to alarms; monitors and maintains facility support systems; actively identifies safety hazards and takes action or recommends remedies as appropriate.

Operation and Maintenance of Equipment: Organizes and maintains hatchery tools, equipment, and grounds; identifies and communicates safety concerns; uses tools and equipment properly and safely; operates fish counting equipment; provides regular maintenance to skidsteer and excavator; uses the heavy equipment for site development or fish husbandry activities while maintaining personal and co-worker safety.

Recordkeeping and Reporting: Accurately enters data into forms and spreadsheets, databases and other computer software programs (e.g. fish mortality, feed sheets, feed inventory, fish transfers); monitors and records information from automated fish culture systems; maintains records as required for the Canadian Food Inspection Agency s Compartmentalization Program.

Working Conditions:

• Typically work 5 8-hour days per week, depending on time of year, includes days, nights, weekends, and holidays as needed.
• Work outside in adverse weather conditions and perform strenuous activities.
• This position requires a valid driver s license.

Knowledge and Abilities Required:

• Undergraduate degree in a field related to agriculture or animal husbandry.
• The ability to life 30-50 lbs out of doors in all weather conditions and perform strenous physical activities.
• Operation of heavy equipment including an excavator and skidsteer.
• Safe and proper use and maintenance of tools and equipment.
• Math skills; calculates and understands quantities and proportions.
• Fish culture techniques; rearing procedures.
• Computer skills; familiar with Microsoft Excel.
• Understanding water dynamics (e.g. flows, flow patterns, availability, temperature, etc.).
• Basic knowledge of aquaculture plumbing, including tank inflow and outflow, effluent management, and recirculation.
• Ability to communicate clearly and work well with others as a team player.

Terms of Employment: Full Time Permanent

Salary: $15.50 - $22.00 / Hourly

Vacation: 2 weeks/year
