JOB PROFILE: Reporting directly to the Operations Manager, the Dairy Farm Supervisor is responsible for managing the research dairy facility. This includes health & safety; animal welfare, staff scheduling & development; coordination with research staff & other areas as.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Organizes workflow and schedules dairy unit staff;
Ensures a safe and healthy work environment;
Facilitates an effective team environment and works co-operatively with all other units;
Maintains and updates processes and standard operating procedures (SOPs) within the dairy unit, including creating new SOPs and training staff;
Collaborates with the Operations Manager in creating short- and long-term plans for capital improvements, technology opportunities and staff development;
Builds effective relationships with industry partners, suppliers and service technicians;
Acts as company ambassador by effectively communicating with and providing tours to visitors and clients.
PREFERRED HIRING CRITERIA:
Extensive knowledge and experience in all aspects of managing a Canadian dairy herd, including:
Animal comfort and welfare issues
Maintenance of dairy records in accordance with the Canadian Quality Milk Program
Managing young dairy calves in colostrum administration, dehorning, and vaccinating
Familiarity with synchronization protocols
Extensive and effective people management experience
Degree/Diploma in Agriculture, preferably with some business training/experience;
Experience with research herds and or research protocols an asset;
Excellent organizational skills;
Training in Artificial Insemination and in the handling of some hazardous materials and substances;
Some mechanical aptitude to maintain and repair an extensive array of dairy research equipment.
