We're looking for a reliable and hardworking candidate to join our team in a permanent and full-time position. Candidates must be comfortable working with livestock, tractors, chainsaws and weedwhackers, and able to perform physical tasks in all weather. Above all, candidates must be responsible, have a good attitude and be able to work attentively in a dynamic environment at a variety of tasks.
We're a diverse farm located in Kingston, ON, focused on using regenerative practices with no chemical inputs and a positive impact on the environment.
We have a small scale vegetable plot, diverse orchard, small herd of Red Devon cattle, sheep, chickens, and hens.
The position is Monday-Friday, 7:30am-4pm, with some flexibility required based on seasonal demands.
$20/hour starting wage.
Requirements
-valid driver's license of G2 or above
-able to get to and from work independently (we're in the country, there is no bus route)
-reliable attendance is critical
-able to work outside in all weather (within reason)
-able to do heavy lifting and manage physical tasks
-comfortable working with animals and able to work calmly under stressful conditions
-able to work with chainsaws and weedwhackers, including cleaning and basic maintenance
-quick on your feet
-comfortable with both dynamic and repetitive tasks
-comfortable working alone and with a team
-hard-working and able to learn new tasks
-able to drive a tractor (or willing to learn)
-responsible and attentive
Tasks
Jobs will vary from day to day and change with the seasons, but will include..
-working with animals, including setting up fencing for rotational grazing (daily from April-November)
-cleaning out the barn and providing bedding, feed, and wellness checks (daily from November-April)
-assisting during lambing/calving season (setting up nursing pens, etc)
-assisting with administering oral meds to sheep (dewormer, etc)
-assisting during maple syrup season
-greenhouse work (mixing compost, making soil blocks) (April/May)
-applying compost/woodchips with wheelbarrow or tractor
-planting the vegetable garden (not your main responsibility, but may get called upon to help when needed)
-maintaining tree rows and orchard (mulching, weeding, irrigating, pruning, removing and replacing dead trees)
-helping during haying season (collecting square bales from the field and loading them into the barn)
-harvesting fruit and vegetables (again, helping when needed with big jobs)
-clearing brush and dead trees, and maintaining trails, with a variety of weedwhackers
-chopping firewood
-other tractor work (flipping the compost piles every few months, cleaning out the barn and cow shelter in the spring, moving hay bales, etc)
-helping with basic building/repair jobs
Experience working with animals, tractors, chainsaws/weedwhackers, and doing mechanical work is a huge asset, but a good attitude and aptitude for learning will do!
